This tool helps us communicate and encourage collaborative behaviours in a workshop. Observing the Jam Behaviours will help get better ideas and teamwork and ensure people have a positive experience as well as a creative one.

“A new idea is nothing more or less than the combination of old elements.”

― James Webb Young

We can use Jam Behaviours if we are running an ideas workshop or a brainstorm. The mind-set required for idea generation is different from the operational mind-set for effective day-to-day project delivery. Highlighting some rules helps create an environment for collaboration where ideas can hatch.

We include the Jam Behaviours in an event’s slide deck, or print them out A3 size and put them on the wall in our meeting space. We talk the group through them as part of our meeting introduction and context setting. We invite everyone to agree to operate this way. By agreeing to these behaviours from the outset, it allows us to refer to them later without being too controlling.
