Sector: Transport
Our brief: How can UK railways collaborate to deliver a safe and efficient automated railway network by 2030?
What we did: We convened a network of train operating companies, universities, investors and inventors and ran a series of co-creation workshops to develop a sector-wide strategy. Then we ran public innovation challenges to create new commercial partnerships.
What happened: The first challenges of the FuTRO (Future Traffic Regulation Optimisation) open innovation programme were to source innovative control and sensor technologies. The £500,000 Supermap and Universal Data challenges funded 10 innovative companies and universities to develop feasibility and demonstration projects to combine data sources and optimise the railway system through modelling.
