Thanks Pedro. Glad you enjoyed it and that it was helpful. Both titles look interesting though I think I prefer the first. And yes, ecosystems are fundamentally formed of (near) equals from possibly large and small companies. It's difficult to have any kind of relationship if the power difference is too great. Speak soon, Roland

Thanks for the post Roland! very interesting and absolutely relevant for what I'm doing now in my PhD research. In fact after just having decided the title:

"Co-Creation Dynamics in Collaborative Networks:
The Role of the R^D and Manufacturing Interface in Cross Boundary Innovation"

I'm convinced that technology based SMEs are a critical piece of any healthy innovation ecosystem, given their risk taking attitude, agility and passion. A good example of this are Germany's "Mittelstand" SMEs companies which have been a great enabler of bigger automotive and heavy machinery companies.

Cheers!

Thanks Kristine for the link to the NESTA report. Yes I recall that and have had first hand of experience of the motivational power of getting your ideas in front of the top brass.
Thanks Michael for your positive comment too. Yes there is a lot of value waiting to be released. If only companies knew what companies knew...

Great perspective. I suspect that there is immense hidden value just waiting to be tapped, if managed sensitively and authentically.

A study published by NESTA in 2009 goes into detail about exactly this topic of enhancing innovative working within an organisation. (http://creativity.city.ac.uk/everydayinnovation.html) - the research was led by Prof. Fiona Patterson from City University London.

One interesting thing about reward is that people often respond better to rewards like exposure to senior management or even recognition within the company rather than the monetary rewards that are so commonly applied. Money is nice, but feeling valued and appreciated is priceless. :-)

As I scanned the word 'cow', 'grass' immediately popped into my head! I must have spent too much time in Japan.
I am interested in how the concept of 'open innovation' is translating to Japan and how it will be 'Japanalized'.
Many Japanese companies have a long history of external collaborations, and some may use the term open innovation to describe what is already there. The keiretsu system of inter-relations between various group companies and their suppliers is a kind of ecosystem that may provide insights into how a complex net of relationships works.
From a different viewpoint, social constraints may be responsible for the cohesion within groups, and membership of the group is necessary in a country where earthquakes, tsunamis and typhoons can have devastating effects.

Hi Tanarat thanks for your question. Yes Open Ideo is a kind of digital platform that, as far as I understand it, holds out no promise of a further exchange of value. Digital platforms can be the start of all sorts of collaborative journeys but most crowdsourcing sites (like Dell ideastorm and mystarbucks idea) are only about ideas not execution.

Hope this helps
David

Hi, this is really useful model. I am a design and brandign student. Can I ask something, what do you think an "OPEN IDEO" social innovation platform would be fit in which area in this model? Is is digital platform? Could you please explain how.. thank you

Posted on behalf of Adrian Furner:
It's a really interesting space as there is a natural desire for established organisations to keep their existing "products" in the cash cow box of the BCG matrix usually through "sustaining innovations" whereas new entrants are trying to move the box using "growth innovations". There is a natural tension here and those companies that survive and thrive tend to be able to use both in an agile and adaptive manner.
