“100% Open have helped us to rapidly develop our understanding of the Open Innovation space and identify the best approach for our business. They clearly appreciate the challenges that large businesses have innovating and by bringing tested methodologies, broad experience and can-do attitude they have provided both guidance and inspiration in our Open Innovation journey.”

Tony Pile, Royal Mail

100%Open recently worked with Royal Mail to help Britain’s biggest network understand the potential for collaborative innovation. The Royal Mail is no stranger to collaborative business and has a number of initiatives already in place.

We conducted a strategic planning programme that we call 100%Plan to try to set an open innovation strategy in place of the typical ad hoc arrangements that dominate as open innovation comes of age.

Our objective was to see what major revenue-generating opportunities there are for the Royal Mail if the organisation opened up access to its first class set of assets.

Our approach consisted of an audit of existing strategies, activities and idea bank, a series of stakeholder interviews and to facilitate a number of workshops in order to identify the most promising open innovation challenges and potential partners. Like all large firms we’ve worked with the Royal mail has no shortage of excellent but untried new business ideas.  So unlike with a traditional innovation agency approach we didn’t start with idea generation. Our overall output was to create an open innovation blueprint for execution by internal teams and new external partners. There are now three exciting and novel platforms from which the Royal Mail will reach out and engage new business partners, both large and entrepreneurial.
