Connecting the Dots was an open innovation strategy project to explore the future potential for open innovation at LEGO.
LEGO is already a true pioneer the space of open innovation with many famous successful examples already including LEGO Mindstorms, Design By Me, Cuusoo and LEGO Architecture. As part of this project we were really keen to learn from the teams within LEGO about the benefits and challenges of opening up their innovation process to fans and entrepreneurs.
In addition we set out to learn from other world leading companies and so conducted a series of interviews and ran workshops to learn about how the most creative companies in the world innovate successfully with others.
Finally we also co-designed, prototyped and delivered a range of new open innovation pilots to learn by doing. Getting our hands dirty by experimenting with new open innovation methods was perhaps the most rewarding aspect of this project.
LEGO already gives people millions of opportunities to interact and it was really exciting to work with how this could be translated into all aspects of innovation for the LEGO Group. Connecting the dots across these strands helped us co-create a tangible feeling for the enormous potential for open innovation to grow at LEGO.
